It is the mid-eighties and the Red Army is encountering fierce resistance in Afghanistan. The action is also heating up in the dusty border town of Peshawar, Pakistan, where we meet Nick Daley, the unorthodox CIA officer from The Company She Keeps. The intrigue begins with the disappearance of the first shipment of American Stingers--the shoulder-fired missiles that threaten Soviet might--and then deepens with a mysterious graveyard murder.
The arrival of investigative journalist, Robin Reeves, stirs things up further. Gradually, an unusual love story unfolds, a triangle involving Nick, Robin and her former Berkeley lover, Jamal, now a charismatic mujahideen chief operating out of a hidden Afghan mountain base--a man with many enemies.
Nick and Robin are both seeking to find the elusive rebel leader when their paths cross. These characters lead us into a world of danger, a world of spy versus spy, where no one is what he or she seems. Where hidden agendas provide their own kind of veil… until an unexpected relationship leads to shocking consequences. Amid the clash of powerful forces, the mystery is ultimately resolved in a shattering climax.

"Good fiction mesmerizes the reader much the same way fine cinema keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Some writers, however, take it a step further. They manage to achieve our craft's ultimate goal--to blur the line between life and fantasy.
That's the stuff of great fiction. The characters are so richly developed, they remind you or someone you know--or think you've known. The book's detailed setting makes you believe you've been there. The story line and world events mingle so completely you start to confuse the plot with what you read in the evening paper.
To attain this level requires talent and hard work. Nonfiction books contain a bibliography. Fiction works don't, but there is an equal measure of research that goes into the very good works. Diana R. Chambers has done her homework here, and that's why Stinger is such a great read. It leaves the reader pondering if it's fiction… or is it a CIA legend?"
-Wayne Arnold, author
