Thirteen-year-old Megan tricks her conservative parents into letting her spend three weeks on a rural commune with a classmate while her parents go to Hawaii for a second honeymoon. What was supposed to be a fun vacation turns sour as she quarrels with her classmate. Then things get downright ugly as a visitor tries to take advantage of her. But Megan learns how to handle herself when life plays rough. She even discovers how to nudge her parents toward loosening up their controlling ways!

Read a Sample Chapter of Moons and Junes
I enjoyed the book very much. It is well written and very much suited to the age group of the main characters. I believe it has important things to say about alternative ways of thinking, living, and interacting with each other. Our current way of life is terribly destructive and unsustainable. It is crucial for us to examine alternative ways of living in the world and with each other. It is especially important to expose the very young to such ideas. They are going to need them. If I were still teaching language arts in a middle school I would try to include this book in my reading materials.

I've lived in communities like Wild Wind for the better part of a decade. It is always a pleasure to see this life described in published writing.
This is Megan's first visit to Wild Wind. Claire Garden, an experienced communard herself, devotes much of Moons and Junes to describing the look and feel of the place and how Megan reacts.--Reviewed by Howard Fenster
I thoroughly enjoyed "Moons and Junes" by Claire Garden. Claire has a real knack for tackling complex issues in a lively way through engaging characters and good storytelling. Several humorous passages had me laughing out loud. The dialogue and reactions of her teen characters struck me as being right on target.--Reviewed by Joan McElroy

About the Author
The best of her childhood was the time spent on her grandparents' Iowa farm--80 acres with horses, cows, chickens, pigs, barn cats and a farm dog--all within the framework of traditional rural neighborliness. This led to Claire's later passion for the community lifestyle, especially in gardening communities.
After her children were grown, Claire and some friends tried unsuccessfully to start an eco-village in Kansas. Then she decided to join East Wind, a rural community in the Ozarks of Missouri that has been around for decades. It was there she learned about fair fighting and other skills for conflict resolution.
